February 2020 Workshop: The Opening Line

15th February @ 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Laura Taylor, our new Treasurer, will be holding an interactive workshop at Club Sapphire from 1pm. The theme of the workshop is ‘The Opening Line’.

In a world of increasing distractions and with most online book retailers now offering samples for preview before purchase, it’s more important than ever to capture your audience from the very first line of your work.

In the workshop, we’ll be exploring what works and what doesn’t, and how you can create an opening that not only gets your readers’ attention, but also sets the tone for the rest of the piece. We’ll also be looking at examples from famous authors to see how they grabbed their readers’ attention.

The workshop will be very interactive, with plenty of writing exercises as we work on developing great opening lines/ paragraphs for a variety of writing styles. The structure of the workshop will be far more a group discussion than a lecture, so that we can all benefit from each other’s experience. Please bring a notepad and pen, and a willingness to give it a go.

About our presenter: Laura Taylor has recently moved to the Bega Valley from the NSW Central Coast. She is predominantly a fantasy and romance writer, with eleven published novels, and has been passionate about writing ever since she was a teenager.
